Having outgrown the look and feel of their existing bathroom, our clients envisioned a modern spa-inspired steam room designed for relaxation and wellness. They visited our Edinburgh showroom seeking design ideas and inspiration for their steam room renovation. After browsing through our thoughtfully curated displays, they knew exactly what they wanted for their bathroom. Seeing the quality, precision, and attention to detail reflected in our showroom installations, they were confident that we were the right team to bring their vision to life.
Design Brief
Our client was seeking a spa-inspired steam room that also functions as a shower, combining everyday practicality with a luxurious wellness experience. They requested a separate bath area for a dedicated bath experience and long soaks. In addition, they required ample storage solutions to keep the steam room organised, practical, and clutter-free. Our client requested a seamless combination of tiling and wallpaper to bring a sense of uniqueness and style to their steam room.
Steam Room Survey
Our team arranged a survey with the client to assess the feasibility of the steam room renovation and to fully understand the scope of work. We engaged in a relaxed, informal conversation with the client to understand their preferred colour scheme, materials, products, and finishes. This helped us gain insight into how they intended to use the space, allowing us to create a truly bespoke design that suits their style.
Bathroom design
We brought the details back to our showroom for our design team to develop further. Our team reimagined the entire bathroom space to create a more open layout, incorporating the details outlined in the design brief. We positioned the bath area on the right side upon entry, creating a spacious and comfortable bathing experience, and placed the vanity unit along the front wall, where it is immediately visible and serves as a focal point.
The WC is positioned on the left side of the space, helping to open up the layout and to create a generous central area for movement and use. We created an alcove shower area that combines a spacious shower and steam room, complete with an ergonomic seating area designed for comfortable, extended use. Using our CAD system, we created a 3D visualisation of the spa-inspired steam room, allowing the client to virtually walk through the space with their colour scheme, products, dimensions, and layout. This enabled them to make fully informed decisions prior to installation.
Steam Room Preparation
Prior to the commencement of on-site works, extensive preparation was undertaken to ensure a safe and controlled start to the project. We laid protective dust sheets and carpet protection from the entrance and provided an 8-yard skip for waste removal, positioned on the street with the appropriate permit in place. We isolated the bathroom water supplies and fully stripped the room of all sanitary ware and tiles.
Product Selection and Renovation Approach
To complete the steam and shower room, we selected a Novellini shower tray paired with the Novellini Zephyros enclosure, chosen for its sleek design, durability, and its ability to retain steam within the space. A Crosswater two-control trim set with a hand shower and recessed showerhead was selected to create a comfortable, spa-like showering experience with consistent flow and intuitive control. All in matte black to ensure a consistent and cohesive finish throughout the space.
The vanity is completed with a two-drawer unit, base cabinetry, and a two-door mirrored cabinet, all finished in a bespoke colour from the Dansani Calidiris range. This added an elegant, bespoke touch while providing ample storage for everyday use. The Geberit AquaClean, complemented by a coordinating flush plate, provides a sleek and contemporary finish that integrates seamlessly with the overall design. We selected a matte black towel rail from Zehnder to complete the design, adding warmth to the steam room.
Steam Room Installation
Our team carried out the entire installation works to deliver a high-quality, bespoke Hammam-style shower area. We fully reconfigured the plumbing services to accommodate the new layout and installed the client’s bath, sanitaryware, shower fittings, heated towel rail, mirror, and associated accessories, ensuring a seamless and cohesive finish throughout.
For joinery works, our team reinstated wall areas affected by the strip-out, constructed a bespoke timber-framed Hammam with integrated seating and recessed features, and formed bespoke bath framing with integrated lighting details. Additional works included creating a flush bulkhead with a recessed heated towel rail and installing a lowered ceiling in the steam room, finished with wet wall panels.
Our tilers prepared and tiled the steam room walls to the specified height and completed tiling to all external walls and newly formed features in line with the design. We installed an insulated sub-floor system, then laid the floor tiling, fully waterproofed the shower area, and formed tiled recesses finished with matte-black trim. We carried out all grouting, polishing, and finishing works to the highest standard, delivering a durable and refined finish throughout.
Our Electricians installed LED downlights throughout the space, including shower and recessed areas, along with under-unit floor lighting to enhance ambience. The scope also includes dimmer controls, connections for underfloor heating, and all associated wiring for the steam generator and illuminated mirror, providing a fully integrated and functional electrical system.
Conclusion
Our fully employed in-house tradespeople managed every aspect of the renovation, from the initial consultation and design through to product selection, installation, and final decoration, ensuring a seamless steam room renovation completed to the highest standards. Our client was over the moon with their spa-inspired steam room renovation, as it was exactly as they envisioned, and the entire renovation was smooth and stress-free from start to finish
